So a few weeks ago, I realized that it’s been a REALLY long time since Bean or any of the other dogs have gotten any new toys. Honestly, they probably have enough already, but it feels like every time I go to the store I stand in that aisle FOREVER trying to pick out something decent they would enjoy playing with!
So as I began to toy with the idea of buying some new toys, I started to wonder just how we owners decide what toys we want to buy for our dogs in the first place!
I mean, it’s not like having kids, who point to the shelf and let us know very vocally that they want “that” particular toy. The ball is completely in our court.
I always want to make sure I’m getting the best bang for my buck and ensure that my dogs get the most enjoyment out of their toys. And if you’re anything like me, you do too.
So I decided to throw together a quick guide for purchasing toys, you know just in case you’re as torn as me! That way you can reference it now or later!
The Darling Dog Mom’s Guide to Toy Shopping:
What three things should you look for when going shopping for dog toys?
Make sure the toys are high quality.
Dog toys can be EXPENSIVE! So of course you want to make sure you’re purchasing toys that last. So when you’re buying the toys in store, make sure it’s made of high quality material. Pick up the toy and give it a feel. Does it seem durable? Flimsy? Is it already falling apart?
Plenty of toys are made now with multiple layers to withstand even the biggest destroyer, though they do tend to be more expensive. At the very least, if you plan on going toy shopping, avoid the cheap dollar store toys if you can. And if I’m being honest, I’ve found that most of the toys I buy online are of much better quality than the ones I find online.
Such as BarkBox.
One of my favorite new toys brands that I got to try recently are the toys from BarkBox!
I received my first ever BarkBox this week and was totally impressed! Not only was the packaging adorable, but everything within that box was high quality and my dogs loved to play with them.
I received a few toys that they can just play with in the house and yard and an awesome doggie pool toy, which I really can’t wait to try out.
In addition to the toys, included in the box I received several bags of treats along. I received one bad of chicken and one beef flavored package. Now my dogs come running every time I open up the package. If it’s possible to buy more bags, I definitely will.
Finally, I received a beef chew for Bean that I know is going to be her favorite part of the box!
I was so thrilled to get to finally try out some awesome products form BarkBox and I definitely recommend these. These boxes would make awesome Christmas or birthday gifts, but they would also be a great way to take the guess work out of buying toys!
Make sure the toy suits your dog.
You want your dog to enjoy his toys more than anything so make sure that they toys you are buying fit your pet and his unique personality! If your dog loves to play tug-o-war buy some rope toys! If he loves to play fetch, buy some balls. Purchase the kind of toys that your dog loves and will use!
Of course, if you want to try something new and it turns out your dog won’t play with it, you can always donate it to a shelter!
Additionally, when making a purchase consider when and where you will be playing with this toy. If you’re going to be playing outside or in the pool, opt for some waterproof toys. And if you plan to play inside, the more stuffing, the better.
Make sure it’s safe.
Duh! You never want to give your let something that will harm them. Make sure the toy is free from any harmful chemicals or parts (though this should be a given if it’s a toy manufactured FOR dogs).
Most of all, make sure your toy is size appropriate so that there’s no risk of choking.
So there you have it! My own guide to purchasing dog toys. Hopefully it’s a little easier in the future! And In case you want a little more guidance, here’s a list of some awesome dog toys you might want to try out!
