My New Year’s Resolutions

If I’m being completely honest with myself, I never have been any good at goal setting. Sure, I have always had some grand ideas in my head, but I rarely ever manage to follow through with them.

Admittedly, my goals have been known to be a little lofty at times, but I like to think I’ve gotten better at setting realistic goals over the past couple of years.

Now with one challenge overcome here comes the hard part: actually following through and achieving my goals or you know, at least TRYING to.

So in hopes of a better year, a year where I actually achieve my goals, I’ve decided to write them down. Hopefully writing them down will allow me to reflect on my goals more often and make me more accountable as well.

Some of my goals are simple. I’ve had them in mind to live a healthier, simpler, happier lifestyle while others are more meaningful to me.

1. Drink more water and kick the energy drink habit.

One of my weak spots when it comes to my health has been my penchant for drinking juice or soda over water. This is definitely one of my simpler goals for 2019, but important nonetheless. I also really hope 2019 will be the year I stop relying on energy drinks to get me through the days.

2. Work on becoming more minimalistic.

Something I realized this past year was that I have WAY too much “stuff.” Really, it’s pretty incredible how much you accumulate without realizing it. This year, I hope to reduce my waste and the amount of junk clogging up my life, by routinely clearing out my own belongings for things I don’t need and by doing things like shopping second hand instead of always buying new.

3. Become more financially secure.

After graduating college in 2017, it’s been a rough year or so financially with student loans, a car payment, and my other bills piling up. This year I hope to learn new skills to become financially secure. I hope to work on my saving and spending habits and possibly learn about investing.

4. Strengthen my bond with Bean by working on her training and through quality time together.

Bean may be a dog, but she is one of the most important pieces in the puzzle of my life. While training is always important with a reactive dog, I hope to continue to strengthen our bond by teaching her new skills and allowing her to make new friends. I also hope to focus more on her during our time together and less on the distractions of everyday life.

5. Make a friend-or two.

Since graduating college, most of my friends have drifted off the map. Without classes and the stress of college to keep us together, we have realized we probably really don’t have all that much in common and our lives are all too busy now for our weekly hang outs. This year I hope to make a new friend or two, friends with genuine connections and interests that I can hopefully carry through life.

6. Start a book club.

I’ve always wanted to be a part of a book club and certainly this would help my goal of making friends!

7. Focus on my mental health and interpersonal skills.

I feel like mental health is one of those things that always gets pushed to the side in our busy modern lives, but I KNOW how important it is. It’s so important for me to be happy and healthy mentally as an unhealthy mind reeks havoc on the body and on our important relationships. I also hope to work on my own interpersonal skills as well, hopefully gaining better skills in communication and my ability to approach confrontations in a mature way to resolve problems effectively.

8. Finish my book draft and editing my draft.

This is my most important goal of 2019! I have been working on a draft for a novel since August of 2018 and I’M SO CLOSE to finishing. Sure, I know there’s a lot of work to be done on it, but I’m excited! Being an author of a novel has always been my dream and this year I hope to take big steps to achieving this goal!

Well, that’s it guys! Here’s to a great 2019!

What are some of your goals for 2019? Are you doing anything special to help achieve them? Let me know in the comments below!
